Reflections from the lake

The gentle winter sun, washed out like I had taken my watercolours to it, light golden ripples across the lake, the sounds are all muted, probably because I can't wear my hearing aids out in the lake and the fact that I have a hat on, all I can hear is the gentle tinkling of the water as my hands propel me forward. At that moment, the lake offers up its magic and its wisdom, beingness, alive and vital, that little sign that I am here in this present moment nowhere else, a sense of gratefulness radiates from somewhere deep within.

The only moment we have

Present moment awareness is a practice, it doesn't always require taking a dip in an icy lake unless that takes your fancy. The odd thing is that our presence is the most natural state we can reside in, yet we so often leap over it in our mental journey back to the past and forward to the future.

Of course, we live in a world that requires us to plan, to look forward in order to plot a course through life. We are also conditioned to learn from our past, normally focusing on what went wrong so that we don't do it again. It is no surprise that residing in the present moment can seem like a radical notion, in fact, it is no surprise that we don't even remember that the present moment exists.

For years I lived like this, dwelling in regrets from the past, anxious about making the right steps for the future, leap-frogging over the present. I could never seem to find any solid ground, constantly looking "out there" for it, forgetting that it is here, always was, always will be.

The present moment, a little piece of solid ground in an ever-changing world. The one place that we actually occupy right here right now.

I invite you to take a little moment, rest your feet gently on the floor, close your eyes if you wish, notice the fact that you are breathing, the steady flow of air in and out of the body.

Take your time go gently

This is time for you.

I suppose this is a little prompt, a reminder that we are human beings, not human doings. The present moment is a state of being, being with our life experience as it unfolds. There really is some magic here, a peace that we find nowhere else.

It is not obvious at first. If we have spent years projecting to the past or future, it will take time, but there need be no hurry, the present moment will always be there. Gentleness, kindness, compassion and patience, the true watchwords for beingness and gateways to the present.

The present moment is our birthright, it is our natural resting state when we let things settle, it is effortless once we awaken to it.

Hold it gently in awareness. Everything is going to be ok. Observe with gentle curiosity this thing we call life. Let it evolve and change as it always will, moment to moment, day by day, year by year.

Somehow the spirit of gentleness tells us what we need.
